Nadje Noordhuis began working as a private trumpet and piano instructor when she was seven years old, teaching half hour lessons to her peers before school. Over the last three decades, she has fine-tuned her teaching skills, and can quickly assess technique problems and create effective methods of improvement. She was fortunate to have brass guru Laurie Frink as her private teacher during her Masters of Music degree at Manhattan School of Music. Frink’s methodology, developed from the teachings of Carmine Caruso, is the basis for her technique instruction. Pre pandemic, Nadje often taught brass players traveling through New York, who wished to utilize her expertise in embouchure adjustments and other brass specific issues, time effective practice routines, and air flow efficiency. Nadje’s method of teaching improvisation focuses on creating a series of exercises for each individual improvisor to help build their musical vocabulary, fluidly execute and connect their ideas, and form their own sound.
Noordhuis has taught improvisation, composition, brass technique, and entrepreneurship masterclasses during residencies at universities internationally, for group classes at Manhattan School of Music’s summer program, as well as private composition lessons. She has directed and coordinated small and large jazz ensembles for twenty years through her work as a college clinician, as a combo coach for the Manhattan School of Music Precollege division, and as an big band conductor in New York middle schools.
Noordhuis is currently on faculty at Manhattan School of Music, Berklee College of Music, Hunter College, and was on faculty at Sydney Conservatorium in 2021. She also maintains a busy private studio, both in-person and via Zoom/Skype.
